My voice acting career is slowly but surely growing. I’ve spent a good bit of time (and $) on coaching, training, business tools and casting sites (le, sigh, paying to try to get work just feels off) and so far, 2026 is starting off better than any other year!
Since I’ve been a techy-feely human for almost 20 years (yep, bought the domain in August 2006), I am happy that it remains my “hook” to describe myself and my approach to voice acting and I find that it really just describes voice acting as a whole.
In today’s VO world, you have to be techy-feely. We don’t go to studios and expect an engineer to do the work like the “olden days”. Sure, there are still audio engineers and studios and that work happens but for many of us non-union types, we are “self directed” and “self producing” most of work.
This means you don’t just need the acting skills and script analysis techniques to find the story and emotion in whatever words you have in front of you. You need the tech stuff. You need to be comfortable (enough) with the tech stuff – be it audio editing, basic audio processing, file naming and organization, file transfer, email, website stuff. You name it, you need to be at least comfortable enough to dive in and not scared to try things.
I see a number of VO folks now offering all kinds of the tech side – video processing masterclasses, website development services, proofing, etc. Makes sense since (ha) many actors probably don’t want to get into the tech weeds. But I love both. And, I hope that is a superpower for me!
